The Grand Island Archaeological Research Program is dedicated to understanding the entire history of Grand Island from the first inhabitants during the Late Archaic (2,000 BC), throughout the Woodland Periods right up to contact with Euro-Americans. The 2010 field season will focus on Woodland Period settlements along the south shore of the island. The focus of the proeject is on block style clearing excavation but students get experience in Phase II testing and Phase I survey as well. Students live as well as work on the island.

The program will continue archaeological investigations of Fort St. Joseph, a mission-garrison-trading post complex established by the French in 1691 and occupied for nearly a century in Niles, Michigan. Since our initial field discovery in 1998, we have conducted systematic excavations to demonstrate the presence of undisturbed architectural remains, cultural deposits, and other features that have the potential to help us rewrite the history of colonialism in the western Great Lakes. We invite you to become a part of our archaeological team as we explore an important multi-ethnic fur-trading site, recover 18th century artifacts, and interpret them to the public.

This summer we will continue our work at the Carson Mound Group (located in northwestern Mississippi), one of the largest prehistoric ceremonial centers in the Mississippi alluvial valley. The 1894 Cyrus Thomas map shows more than 80 mounds at the site, although only the largest remain today. Our continuing research goals include relocation of destroyed mounds, better understanding the complex site structure, and evaluating the nature of flood deposits that cover much of the site. Students will become familiar with the tools of archaeology, from trowels to gradiometers. There will be a strong emphasis on cutting-edge geospatial instruments, which we have successfully employed at this and other sites in the region.

The University of Mississippi will be conducting an intensive archaeological field school at the Carson Mounds site, one of the largest prehistoric ceremonial centers in the Mississippi alluvial valley. In his 1894 landmark publication on the mounds of the eastern United State, Cyrus Thomas included a map of the site showing more than 80 mounds. Most of the smaller mounds have been obliterated by the more than 100 years of cultivation that followed. This course offers students the opportunity to learn archaeological field methods at one of the major Mississippian sites in the Southeast. Much of the work this season will focus on mapping complex ritual structures and salvage excavation of bioarchaeological features. Students will also learn more advanced archaeological techniques including GIS and remote sensing using magnetometry and ground penetrating radar.

This will be a survey to discover and evaluate prehistoric sites in the south-central uplands around Concord, NH. Previous surveys have documented sites along the upper portions of tributaries to the Merrimack River in this region. The field school will focus on developing a research design to identify site locations, reconnaissance through walkover survey, shovel test surveys and applications of GIS capabilities to refine survey areas. Students will be taught basic field recovery and artifact identification skills as well as taking advantage of the NHDHR archaeological laboratory facilities in Concord for learning basic archaeological laboratory processing methods. In 2011, the San Juan College Totah Archaological Project ANTH 288 field school is continuing work at the Point Site, an Anasazi Chaco-phase great house/village. Excavation will focus on the great kiva during the six week session that runs from June 6 to July 1. We work from 8:30am to 4:30pm excavating 3 or 4 days per week with survey (required), labs (required), and field trips (optional) the other 1 or 2 days per week. No prerequisites and no books required. Grade is determined through participation and a final exam. ANTH 280 3-credit internships are also available which require only two weeks participation and a 10-page research paper.

The Center for Desert Archaeology and the University of Arizona School of Anthropology are offering a preservation archaeology field school in Mule Creek, New Mexico from May 29 through July 4, 2011. The field school will combine training in basic excavation and site recording skills with a curriculum highlighting the goals, ethics, and practice of preservation archaeology, which integrates research, education, and preservation within a community-based framework. Students will participate in test excavations at a 13th century settlement, evening lectures and laboratory sessions, and field trips to major sites in the region. The Center for Public Archaeology at Hofstra University is running an
archaeological field school during summer 2011 researching the history
and archaeology of the Native and African American community of
Setauket on Long Island, New York. Descendants of the Setalcott Nation
and enslaved Africans, members of this community have been residents of
the Setauket area since the 17th century. Over the subsequent centuries,
this community formed a substantial component of the working
community in the larger region while maintaining key features of their
own cultural traditions and history. Students will be learn the details of
this history, contribute to documenting new information from the
archaeological and historical records, and help to present the project’s
finding to the public.

The field school is part of a collaborative historical, cultural, and
archaeological project between Higher Ground Intercultural and
Heritage Association, a descendant community based non-profit
preservation organization, and Hofstra University. The summer 2011 field
school program will be based at the Jacob and Hannah Hart site, a home
site occupied from ca. 1870 - 1930 by one of the community’s most
well-known families. Field school students will work with community
members to survey, excavate, and analyze the findings from the Hart site.
Students will also conduct documentary research in local archives and
help to document private collections of community members.

Binghamton University’s 2011 archaeological field school will continue investigations on an early historic cabin site within the boundaries of the Revolutionary War Newtown Battlefield in Chemung County, New York. One prominent family built and lived in a log cabin during the late 18th century while constructing their main house. The descendants of that family have continually farmed the same land for over 200 years. There also will be opportunities to assist with locating the defining features of the Battlefield and to visit nearby prehistoric sites.

This workshop is designed to provide a practical application of geophysical equipment and aerial photographic techniques available for the identification, evaluation, and ultimately, the conservation and protection of cultural resources. The field exercises associated with the course will concentrate on the application of these techniques to archeological investigations. Instruction will be given in the use, processing, and interpretation of data from magnetometers, conductivity meters, resistivity meters, ground penetrating radar, metal detectors, and magnetic susceptibility instruments and their applications to non-destructive subsurface investigations. The major emphasis of the training will be on the field use of the equipment. Instruction will also be offered in the use of and interpretation of aerial photographic techniques, and in the use of low altitude large scale aerial reconnaissance.

The University of North Dakota's 2010 Archeological Field School will be held at the Elbee and Karishta archeological sites, located within the Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site, Mercer County, ND. The multi-component Elbee site contains as many as eight cultural components, the most prominent being a Plains Village occupation (A.D. 1520-1630). Recent river erosion has exposed two features and artifacts along the entire length of the site. In 2010, students will learn standard archeological excavation procedures during the conduct of salvage excavations designed to acquire as much archeological information as possible, before the features and artifacts are lost to future erosion.

Heidelberg University is offering a five week field school for undergraduate college students, graduating high school seniors, incoming first year college students, and non-traditional adult students for 6 hrs. of academic credit. Degree holding students who wish to gain field experience can take the field school for no credit hours and at a reduced rate. This is an excellent opportunity to gain archaeological experience as well as learn about the American Civil War and the prison system. In addition to the field experience, there will be laboratory sessions in the archaeological laboratory on the Heidelberg University campus. Participants in the field school will gain experience in basic excavation techniques, on-site photography, the recording of archaeological data, and the identification and conservation of historic cultural materials. Students will work at the site Monday through Friday (8:30-3:30) for five weeks. Housing is available through the university with transportation provided to the site. The Forensic Anthropology Field School is an in-depth course covering all aspects of forensic investigation. Over the course of three weeks participants are taught excavation, documentation and analysis techniques, as well as techniques for legally presenting results. The field school combines applied field techniques, guest lectures from experts in the field and lab analysis. Students will work through the mystery of identifying the recreated crime scenes in an effort to identify a missing person whose profile is drawn from a real missing person’s case. This course challenges students at the highest level of understanding and analysis exposing them daily to cutting edge science in the related fields. The WSU Department of Anthropology is offering its seventh annual archaeological field school in conjunction with the BLM Vale Oregon District, directed by Dr. William Andrefsky, Jr. The project area is located in southeastern Oregon approximately 60 kilometers from Jordon Valley on the portion of the Owyhee River that has been federally designated a Wild and Scenic River. The focus of this year’s effort is on the excavation of a large prehistoric multicomponent housepit village. The archaeological site dates from approximately 7,000 to 2,000 years ago. The class will emphasize both academic and practical instruction to develop basic skills in archaeological excavation, survey, mapping, photography, and field curation. Laboratory procedures and lectures on lithic analysis, faunal analysis, and paleoenvironments are also included as part of the program. The program runs from May 24 to June 25, 2010.

This project will document archaeological sites eroding from the cutbanks at Bachelor Island, where recent radiocarbon dating indicates occupation to over 2,400 years ago. The focus of this course is on site identification and documentation, but we will also be auguring and screening. We will also be traveling by canoe and inflatable raft to explore some of the wetlands for archaeological potential. There will also be a number of guest lecturers.

The 2011 Archaeology Field School is the third in a multi-year research project at The Speaker’s House, home of Frederick Muhlenberg (1750-1801), first Speaker of the U.S. House. The house was continually occupied from 1764-2002 and served variously as a private home, general store, doctor's office, and college dorm. This complex history, along with the site’s remarkable features including the remains of ac. 1782 general store, makes it an exciting place to conduct archaeological research. This year’s focus will be on the recently-exposed foundations of a c. 1780s addition to the house and continuing to explore the foundations of the general store. 2011 is particularly noteworthy as the 300th anniversary of the birth of Frederick's father and nearest neighbor, Lutheran minister Henry Muhlenberg. Many special events are being planned, some of which will occur during the field school.

The Speaker's House is the home of Frederick Muhlenberg (1750-1801), first Speaker of the U.S. House. The field experience is an intensive three week program that runs Weds. through Sunday, June 9-13; 16-20; and 23-27 from 8:30 am—4:00 pm daily. Temple University's 2011 Archaeological Field School will focus on the Nesquehoning Creek Site located in Lehigh Gorge State Park, PA. The field school will run from May 16–June 27 (Summer Session I). This summer, students will learn the basics of archaeological investigation on a site which contains buried remains of Native American campsites dating from AD 1500 – 8,000 BC and possibly earlier. The 2010 Courson Archaeological Field School will once again provide a number of different field and laboratory opportunities for participants. Fieldwork will include open block and test excavations at three different prehistoric sites. These sites include a defensive mesa top encampment occupied by hunters and gatherers inhabited around A.D. 400, a small hamlet that was attacked and destroyed around A.D. 1350, and a large village occupied by specialized bison hunters who were heavily involved in exchange with the Eastern Pueblos of New Mexico. A field laboratory will be established to process artifacts and flotation samples. A limited number of participants will also be involved in a systematic metal detecting survey to identify historic period Indian and military encampments.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Field methods are the underpinning of the science of archeology. Rock art has posed a unique challenge to the field archeologist because, unlike other artifacts, it cannot be excavated, labeled, bagged, and transported back to the lab for analysis. This course will examine rock art as an integral component of the archeological record. Students will be trained in field methods to record rock art and will gain first-hand experience recording rock art sites through photography, field sketches, mapping, and written inventories. These field methods are designed to generate a visual and written description of the art, which can be used to infer and explain past human behavior.

Lectures will expose students to methods of interpretation and analysis and to the theoretical underpinnings of cognitive archeology. Lectures will be provided by the course instructor and by archeologists and anthropologists specializing in the archeology of the Lower Pecos, hunting and gathering lifeways, expressive culture, and foraging adaptations.

All students will enroll in Anth486 for 3 credits. Preference will be given to students enrolling for the full six credits but others will be considered. The Texas Archeological Society’s (TAS) 2011 Field School will be returning for the second year to the Eagle Bluff site (41ME147), a multi-component prehistoric site situated on a high bluff overlooking Hondo Creek in Medina County, Texas. This site will provide an opportunity to better understand the cultural patterns of the southern extent of the Edwards Plateau. Four areas were opened in 2010 and these will be expanded in 2011. Occupations at the site extend from the Early Archaic through the Late Prehistoric Periods (6000 BC-AD 1500). Dr. Thomas R. Hester will serve as Principal Investigator.

Located at the southern entrance to Montezuma Canyon, the Nancy Patterson Site represents an isolated microcosm in American History with a full and continual record that spans the early development of cultural groups and social interactions within the greater four corners region. To date, studies over the past 26 years at the Nancy Patterson Site have confirmed it to be a center of major importance in American Southwest History representing more than 100 years of historic history and over 800 years of prehistoric history from the known archaeological record. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The addition of Spirit Bird Cave into the site interpretation has established the village as a place of spiritual and ceremonial importance.

The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and the College of William and Mary offer two sessions of a five-week field school in historical archaeology between June and August 2010. This year's field school will take place at the James Anderson Forge site - a late 18th-century blacksmith shop located along Duke of Gloucester Street in the center of Colonial Williamsburg's restored Historic Area. Participants receive intensive hands-on training in archaeological field methods, as well as experience in public interpretation, identifying colonial-period artifacts, and analyzing faunal remains. The Monticello field school provides a hands-on introduction to basic excavation, recording, and laboratory techniques in archaeology. The course emphasizes a scientific, multidisciplinary approach to landscape archaeology on the Monticello Plantation. In 2011, the Montpelier Archaeology Department will return to the South Yard domestic slave quarters to further develop our understanding of this community of African Americans. This will involve:

* Metal detector survey to identify patterning in the usage of different areas.

* Geophysical survey (resistivity, ground penetrating radar) to identify sub-surface features.

* Archaeological investigation of the southern-most duplex homes.

While previous archaeological excavation has revealed two chimney bases--one of brick (1993) and one of stone (2008)--to date no definitive structural features have been identified, e.g. the location of entranceways, windows, or structural supports, let alone cultural features such as subfloor pits. Indeed, our understanding of the duplexes and smokehouses derives primarily from a fire insurance plat drawn in 1837. Although the scaled drawing indicates that the dimensions of the buildings are consistent with documentary evidence for other structures (multiples of the "golden dimensions" of 16' and 10'), the position of at least three of the structures is off by ~25 feet.

Thus the goals of the excavation will be to recover not only structural details, but how the structures relate to the surrounding formal and work yards, the patterning of work activity around the structures, and how this intersects with the private domestic life of the inhabitants of the duplex homes. The 20th annual University of Hawai‘i Preservation Field School will be held on the islands of Oahu and Hawaii. Working closely with local communities, historians and cultural resource managers, students will be introduced to techniques for documenting the historic sites and cultural landscapes of Hawaii’s plantation heritage. The project is field intensive, but will include significant input, including lectures and demonstrations, from leading experts in the field of historic preservation.

The scared and political center of Moku`ula is the most important site on Maui - and arguably in all of Hawaii. A man-made island, Moku`ula sits in the center of what was once a 17+ acre wetland known as Loko Mokuhinia.
Home to Maui royalty for over 400 years, the site was usurped by Hawaii Island chief, Kamehameha the Great after his successful campaign to unite the Hawaiian Islands. The site is also home to the Akua Mo`o, Kihawahine. Half-woman, half-dragon, Kihawahine lives in a grotto beneath Moku`ula. One of the most powerful deities in the Hawaiian pantheon, Kihawahine is associated with fresh water springs.
