Archaeology Field School Description

In particular, students will have the chance to work with researchers and Indigenous community members as they explore previous hypotheses about the chronology of the rock art in the region. Conducting field work at such iconic sites also gives students insights into the general archaeological history of Australia and will enable them to contextualise broader theories and developments in Australian archaeology.

The field school will involve some lectures, workshops, museum/archive visits and informal interaction with Indigenous community members but will be directed towards in-depth practical recording skills necessary for rock art research in an archaeological framework.

Students will also learn skills such as rock art analysis, rock–shelter surveying, field photography and GPS. In addition they will be introduced to other topics such as anthropology, cultural tourism, oral history, archival research, bushtucker and other types of archaeological sites and features just to name a few.

This field school takes place at iconic Australian archaeological sites Ngaut Ngaut (Devon Downs) and Tungawa (Fromm's Landing), as well as at lesser-known rock art and related archaeological sites in the Mid Murray and Riverland, South Australia. Field school accommodation will be in Mannum– see google map link.
