Archaeology Field School Description

This is a practical experience in the excavation and post-excavation analysis of skeletons from a modern cemetery.

The project aims in the recovery and analysis of individuals from modern burials who are exhumed in aide of a process of recycling old burials from the cemetery in order to create space for new internments to take place. The burials are dated beetwen 1995-2010 and the remains that would be retrieved will be added the Cyprus Research Reference Collection (CRRC) of modern skeletons.

he organizers will provide the students with a thorough and completely hands-on experience in the excavation and analysis of human skeletal remains. The students will participated in all parts of the excavation and post-excavation analyses and they will be trained in field recording and recovery methods applicable to forensic and archaeological contexts. This fieldschool intends to provide exclusive training in the recovery, exhumation and identification of human remains, processing of ante-mortem and post-mortem information related to the internment, artefact/personal belonging cataloguing and processing. Additionally to the excavation, the students will be actively involved in the analysis of more skeletons from the Cyprus Research Reference Collection (CRRC) where they will gain extensive experience in methods of identification and their application, skeletal biology, dental and skeletal pathology and trauma.
