ShovelBums.org LLC, founded in 1999, was created with the single goal of providing archaeologists and CRMer's around the world with jobs. Whether that work is work in the lab, field, or an institution ShovelBums, with 14,000+/- (January 2010) member is completely free to its members because of founder R. Joe's (me) philosophy that it is more important for archaeologists and CRMers to find archaeology and CRM jobs than to make a buck. This is a bad business model, but it is the right thing to do.
The deal has always been if you find a job through ShovelBums I would like you to just shake my, or one of the list moderators, hands someday and say thanks; and if you have some time and a few dollars, buy a beer and tell me about yourself and your days in the field. Since many of us will never cross paths you can buy me the equivalent of a virtual beer, by buying something from this site. And if you don't think we will ever cross paths and you are to broke to buy anything just drop me a note sometime using the contact form on http://www.shovelbums.org I would love to hear from you.
I make about $5 on each bumper sticker (actually I make about $5 on almost everything on this site except for children's clothes and a few misc items which I sell basically at cost). I figure $5 is about what a beer would cost at a conference, and by sporting ShovelBums gear you are able to show that you support this free service and want to keep it going!
The free service ShovelBums not only provides more archaeologists with jobs than any other service in the world, but now also produces one of the worlds largest directories of Archaeology Field Schools. ShovelBums has also been instrumental in helping to stop the fundamentalist movement to teach "intelligent design" as science in public schools. Read about the massive petition on no intelligent design as science at: www.shovelbums.org and A Scientific Support for Darwinism on the Wikipedia.
Go forth and shop and look cool in the field/lab/class!: http://www.cafepress.com/shovelbums (link opens in new window)
Best,
R. Joe
